The Journey Begins
As a building and renovation company based in the heart of Aberdeen, UK, we’ve had the privilege of helping countless homeowners unlock the full potential of their outdoor spaces. And today, I’m thrilled to take you on a journey through the art of creating a backyard garden retreat – a serene haven that seamlessly blends function, beauty, and personal style.
It all started with a call from Victoria, a local resident who had recently purchased a corner property and was ready to transform her backyard into an outdoor living dream. From the moment we connected, I knew this project was going to be something special. Victoria had a vision, and she was eager to collaborate with me to bring it to life.
Overcoming Challenges, Unleashing Potential
One of the biggest obstacles we faced was the uneven terrain of Victoria’s backyard. The grade sloped in various directions, creating a design challenge that required careful planning and expertise. But as the old saying goes, “necessity is the mother of invention,” and we were determined to find a solution.
By working closely with a licensed landscape contractor, we were able to address the grade changes and create a cohesive flow throughout the space. The patio became the new low point, with a curved stone wall retaining the highest grade on the back side. This not only solved the drainage issues but also gave the patio a distinct sense of enclosure, making it feel like its own cozy outdoor room.
Embracing the Unexpected
As we delved deeper into the design process, we encountered another challenge – the unsightly view of the neighbors’ garage. Rather than resorting to the typical screening solutions, we decided to get creative. We opted for a long pergola adorned with Victoria’s favorite climbing roses (Joesph’s Coat), which not only provided privacy but also transformed the view into a lush, visually stunning focal point.
But the surprises didn’t stop there. As we continued to collaborate and refine the design, Victoria made a life-changing discovery – she found a wonderful friend and partner who shared her passion for gardening. Together, they added chickens and started keeping bees, eventually outgrowing the original backyard retreat. I was thrilled to be invited back to design the layout of their new 5-acre property, aptly named Hummingbird Hill – a testament to the power of embracing the unexpected and nurturing the growth of our dreams.
Blending Form and Function
One of the key elements that made Victoria’s backyard retreat so successful was the seamless integration of form and function. From the thoughtfully designed paths that facilitated easy access to the various planting areas, to the strategic placement of the gas-powered firepit that provided instant warmth and ambiance, every aspect of the design was carefully considered.
The use of decomposed granite for the patio surface not only added a beautiful, cream-colored hue but also provided a porous, low-maintenance alternative to traditional hardscaping. And the incorporation of flagstone paths in a variegated lavender-blue tone added a touch of whimsy and visual interest, guiding visitors on a delightful journey through the garden.
Cultivating a Lush, Vibrant Oasis
Of course, no backyard retreat would be complete without a lush and vibrant planting palette. Victoria’s love for colorful plants and a desire for year-round interest guided our plant selections, which included a mix of perennials, edibles, and a few carefully chosen evergreen shrubs.
From the bearded iris collection that she cherished to the hummingbird-friendly Agastache and the hardy Geranium ground cover that kept the pups at bay, every plant was carefully curated to create a visually stunning and functionally diverse landscape. And by incorporating NW native plants like huckleberry and sword fern, we ensured that the retreat would thrive in the local climate, requiring minimal maintenance.
Embracing the Journey
As I reflect on this project, I’m reminded of the importance of collaboration, flexibility, and embracing the unexpected. At ABC Home, our mission is to help homeowners like Victoria unlock the full potential of their outdoor spaces, creating retreats that not only serve as beautiful sanctuaries but also evolve and grow alongside their owners’ changing needs and desires.
The journey with Victoria was filled with surprises, challenges, and ultimately, immense joy. And as she embarks on her latest adventure at Hummingbird Hill, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride and excitement, knowing that the lessons we learned together will continue to shape the creation of exceptional backyard retreats for years to come.
So, whether you’re dreaming of a cozy, intimate nook or an expansive outdoor oasis, let’s embark on a collaborative journey and transform your backyard into a true haven – a place where you can escape, unwind, and cultivate the life you’ve always imagined.
