Calm, Cool, Collected Kitchens

Finding Serenity in the Heart of the Home

The kitchen – it’s the beating heart of the home, where families gather, meals are lovingly prepared, and memories are made. But for many homeowners, the kitchen can also be a source of stress and chaos. That’s why we’re on a mission to help you create a kitchen that’s not just functional, but a true oasis of calm and collected style.

Embracing the Arts and Crafts Aesthetic

When I first met our clients, Norman and Rosemary, in their charming Craftsman-style home in the Sea Cliff neighborhood of San Francisco, I was instantly enamored. The modestly proportioned rooms, the carefully tended garden, and the overall sense of elegant simplicity – it was all so captivating. But the kitchen, well, that was a different story.

Trapped in the 1980s, the kitchen lacked the charm and character of the rest of the home. The narrow space was dominated by a large, awkward island, leaving little room for proper food preparation. The base cabinets were so narrow, they could barely hold a spatula, let alone anything of real substance. It was a classic case of function over form, and it just didn’t fit the vibe of the rest of the house.

As Jace Levinson of Fine Homebuilding described, our challenge was straightforward: to create a kitchen that was more in line with the Arts and Crafts aesthetic of the home, without the need for a costly addition. And that’s exactly what we set out to do.

Cultivating Calm through Careful Design

When it comes to creating a serene and collected kitchen, it’s all about finding the right balance. We took our cues from the simplicity and color palette of the garden just beyond the kitchen, aiming to craft an interior that felt soft, delicate, and utterly tranquil.

One of the key design decisions was to resist the urge to maximize the amount of cabinetry. Instead, we chose to show a bit of restraint, leaving open spaces and allowing the natural beauty of the materials to shine. The upper cabinets, for example, don’t extend all the way to the ceiling, which makes them feel far less imposing. And by selecting a more modest-sized sink, we were able to emphasize the expansiveness of the stunning marble countertop.

The choice of materials was also crucial in establishing the right vibe. We opted for a warm, nature-inspired palette, blending the soft yellow tones of maple with the deep amber hues of Douglas fir. The result is a kitchen that feels both modern and timeless, with a touch of rustic charm.

Bringing in the Light

Of course, no serene kitchen is complete without ample natural light. We worked closely with our clients to maximize the flow of light throughout the space, strategically placing windows and skylights to create a bright, airy atmosphere.

But it’s not just about the natural light – the carefully curated lighting fixtures also play a crucial role in setting the mood. Manufactured by Leucos from Italian Murano glass, the delicate, stainless-steel accents of the pendants help to reinforce the sense of craft and modernity, while the vibrant pops of color add the perfect touch of whimsy.

Balancing Form and Function

Now, we know what you’re thinking – with all this talk of calm and collected design, how on earth do you maintain the functionality of a kitchen? Well, dear friends, that’s where our expertise truly shines.

As the renowned designer Ronnie Kalra reminds us, the key to a successful kitchen design is striking the perfect balance between form and function. And that’s exactly what we’ve achieved in this stunning space.

Sure, we may have dialed back the cabinetry a bit, but every inch has been carefully curated to maximize storage and efficiency. The island, for instance, now serves as the heart of the kitchen, housing the sink, dishwasher, and range, all while providing ample counter space for meal prep.

And let’s not forget about those delightfully deep art shelves along the walls – not only do they add a touch of personalized style, but they also offer additional storage for those oft-used kitchen essentials.

Bringing it All Together

When it comes to creating a calm, cool, and collected kitchen, it’s all about striking the perfect balance. From the careful selection of materials to the strategic placement of lighting and storage solutions, every design decision has been made with intention.

The result? A kitchen that’s not only a feast for the senses, but a true sanctuary in the heart of the home. Whether you’re whipping up a gourmet feast or simply enjoying a cup of tea, this space is guaranteed to soothe the soul and inspire the senses.

So, what are you waiting for? Head on over to ABC Home and let’s start your journey towards a kitchen that’s as serene as it is stylish. After all, life’s too short to live in a constant state of chaos – it’s time to embrace the art of calm, cool, and collected living.
