Investing Wisely in a Nursery That Lasts
Although I’m in the nursery business, I’m well aware that this is a temporary space. Yes, in less than 3 years, you’ll need to do this all over again. So how much do you really need to invest in this space? Even more importantly, how can you invest wisely?
As a mom of three and the owner of Everly & Monet, a division of Daisy Baby & Kids, I’ve learned a thing or two about designing nurseries that can truly grow with your child. The key is to plan smart upfront and incorporate a few key features that will seamlessly transition from baby to big kid.
Convertible Cribs: The Gift That Keeps On Giving
When it comes to choosing a crib, I’m a big proponent of investing in a convertible model. The idea that this crib is going to be your child’s bed until they’re around 10 years old or even off to college is simply genius. Many convertible cribs these days are designed to actually look like real beds, not the bulky, heavy monstrosities of the past.
Brands like Newport Cottages and Natart have really elevated the convertible crib game, with features like low footboards and upholstered headboards. If you’re going to go the convertible route, make sure you absolutely love the design as a bed, not just as a crib.
The Unsung Hero: The Dresser
Now, hear me out. I would actually spend more on the dresser than I would on the crib. Yes, the crib is the centerpiece of the nursery, but the dresser is going to be a long-term piece of beautiful furniture in your child’s room. It’ll start off as a changing station, but it’ll be there long after the diaper days are over.
When choosing a dresser, look for one with deep drawers, smooth glides, and solid construction that can withstand the test of time. And don’t be afraid to mix and match – you don’t have to buy everything from one store. Pair an heirloom dresser with modern hardware or a vintage find with a fresh coat of paint.
Multifunctional Furniture: Your New Best Friend
Another tip? Invest in pieces that can pull double-duty. Instead of a small side table, go for a nightstand that can transition to the big kid bed later on. And that glider you love so much? It can easily become additional seating in your child’s room as they grow.
ABC Home & Construction can help you find the perfect multifunctional pieces to make the most of your nursery space.
Neutral Palettes, Lasting Appeal
When it comes to your color scheme, resist the urge to go all-in on the trendy hues. Instead, opt for a more neutral palette that can seamlessly transition from the nursery to the big kid room. Think light blues, navy, or even calming grays.
I like to use the permanent pieces, like window treatments and rugs, in the more neutral tones. That way, they can easily carry over when you’re ready to redecorate.
Three Phases of Kid Decor
Over the years, I’ve learned that there are about three major kid decor phases. The nursery phase, which lasts from 0-3 years old. Then around age 8, you’ll likely need to transition again as your child starts having their own ideas about their space. And finally, around age 15, you’ll probably want to do another update to accommodate their teenage style.
So, enjoy the nursery phase while it lasts, my friends. That sweet, cozy little space is fleeting, but with some smart planning, you can create a room that will grow right along with your little one.
Mixing High and Low for Maximum Impact
When it comes to outfitting the nursery, don’t be afraid to mix high and low pieces. Pair an investment-worthy dresser with some budget-friendly picture frames from Michaels. Splurge on a stunning piece of artwork, but balance it out with an inexpensive side table from Target.
The key is to create a space that feels thoughtful and personal, not just a showroom display. Incorporate family heirlooms, sentimental gifts from friends, and items you already own. Those little touches are what give a nursery real soul and personality.
Designing for the Long Haul
Ultimately, when you’re designing a nursery, you need to think beyond just the first few years. This is a space your child will inhabit for a decade or more. So invest in pieces that can evolve and adapt to their changing needs and style preferences.
With a little creativity and a whole lot of love, you can design a nursery that your little one will adore from infancy all the way through their teenage years. And ABC Home & Construction is here to help you every step of the way.
