Harmonizing Space and Light: Whole-Home Renovations for a Brighter, More Inviting Home

Unlocking the Power of Design Elements

As a passionate interior designer, I’ve learned that the Elements of Design are the foundation for creating captivating and functional spaces. These fundamental building blocks – like space, line, shape, form, texture, color, and light – are the tools I wield to craft rooms that not only look beautiful, but also feel inviting and harmonious.

Recently, I had the privilege of working on a stunning project in Mesa, Arizona – the Citrus Point home. This stunning Scandinavian Transitional residence, designed by architect James Jones of Hebdon Studios, presented an exciting challenge: how could I translate the architectural language of the exterior into a cohesive and equally captivating interior?

As I outlined in my blog post, the prominent design elements I drew inspiration from were the home’s long vertical lines, elongated rectangle shapes, and narrow rectangular forms. These architectural cues became the guiding principles for my interior design approach.

Rhythm, Contrast, and Emphasis

With the architect’s exterior vision as my foundation, I set out to strategically incorporate curved lines, shapes, and forms into the interior. My goal was to create a rhythmic flow that would offer a delightful contrast to the straight, angular forms of the home’s exterior.

As you can see in the sketches I shared, I intentionally juxtaposed the prominent vertical lines and elongated rectangles with graceful curves and radiuses. This interplay of straight and curved elements not only added visual interest but also emphasized specific focal points throughout the space.

Repetition and rhythm were key in tying the interior together. By echoing the architectural motifs established on the exterior, I was able to craft a cohesive and harmonious aesthetic that seamlessly bridged the indoor and outdoor environments.

Curating Colors, Textures, and Materials

Of course, color, texture, and materials play a vital role in elevating the overall design. As I meticulously selected fixtures, furnishings, and finishes for each room, I made sure they complemented the architectural language and enhanced the visual rhythm I had established.

Take a look at the design board for the workout bathroom – you’ll see how the curved lines of the vanity and lighting fixtures echo the curved forms I introduced in the interior architecture. The carefully curated color palette and material selections work in harmony to create a cohesive, visually striking space.

The Importance of Collaboration

One of the keys to the success of the Citrus Point project was the close collaboration between the architect, the builder, and my design team. By aligning our visions and working together seamlessly, we were able to ensure that the exterior and interior design elements seamlessly enhanced one another, creating a truly harmonious and captivating whole-home experience.

As I walked through the partially completed home during my recent site visit, I was thrilled to see the design concepts I had meticulously planned come to life. The curved details in the cabinetry, the interplay of light and shadow, and the overall sense of balance and unity – it was all coming together beautifully.
