I’ll never forget the Christmas I was nine years old and received a gift I didn’t want. As I stared at the unwanted item, I couldn’t help but wonder – why do we do this whole gift-giving thing? Isn’t it just a bunch of unnecessary stuff, especially if you don’t even want it? That moment planted a seed in my mind that would eventually blossom into a lifelong passion for upcycling and repurposing.
You see, I grew up in a family that valued resourcefulness and sustainability long before it was trendy. My dad would get so frustrated whenever the plastic parts on his appliances and gadgets would break, rendering them useless. He was from a generation where things were built to last, with component parts that could be easily swapped out and repaired. Watching his despair as the endless cycle of waste and disposability crept into our lives left a deep impression on me.
