As an embedded software engineer, I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of future-proofing – designing systems that can adapt and evolve with changing needs. And when it comes to our forever home, this concept takes on an entirely new level of importance. When my partner and I stumbled upon this 18th-century farmhouse in the UK countryside, we knew it would require a complete overhaul. With walls nearly 2 feet thick and no space inside for running cables, it presented a unique challenge. But rather than seeing it as a limitation, we viewed it as an opportunity to build something truly remarkable – a home that would grow and change alongside us.
Laying the Groundwork: Wiring for the Future
One of our top priorities was getting the networking and technology infrastructure right from the start. As an embedded software engineer, I was determined to future-proof this aspect of our home renovation. Rather than relying on a single central wiring closet, we decided to install at least a pair of network points in each room, barring the bathroom. This would allow us to easily add new devices, move things around, or even repurpose rooms without having to worry about the underlying infrastructure. And by using Cat6A or Cat7 cabling, we’d ensure that our home was equipped to handle the ever-increasing bandwidth demands of the future.
Designing for Flexibility: Maximizing the Potential of Your Extension
Of course, the networking setup was just one piece of the puzzle. As we began to plan our home extension, we knew that flexibility and adaptability would be key. After all, the way we use our living spaces today may be vastly different from how we’ll want to use them in 5, 10, or even 20 years.
One of the first things we focused on was integrating the latest smart home technology. We pre-wired for home automation systems, security cameras, sensors, and even future electric vehicle charging stations. By putting the infrastructure in place now, we’d have the freedom to easily integrate new technologies as they emerge, without having to worry about major disruptions to our home.

By incorporating sound-absorbing materials like acoustic plasterboard and strategically sealing any gaps, we were able to effectively soundproof the various rooms within the extension. This not only provides a more peaceful environment, but also ensures that our growing family can enjoy their activities without constantly disturbing one another.
