Prepare to be inspired as we explore the art of creating personalized bathroom sanctuaries that cater to your unique lifestyle and aesthetic preferences.
The Power of Personalization
My bathroom tops the list of things that I love about my house. It’s the number one thing that I look forward to at the start and end of my day because, well, showers are a thing for me – yes, a shower, not a bath, because I’m a think-on-your-feet kind of person. From the very beginning, I knew the kind of look and feel that I wanted, and I poured in solid hours of Instagram-ing to find my perfect urban zen aesthetic.
What’s truly remarkable about the process of crafting a personalized bathroom is the level of control and creativity it affords. It’s not just about choosing tiles and fixtures – it’s about bringing your vision to life, layer by layer, until every element seamlessly comes together to create a space that’s uniquely yours.
Embracing the Unexpected
When my husband, Ralf, and I first discussed our bathroom renovation plans, the conversation went a little something like this: “Oh, oh, how about white subway tiles?” to which I instantly laughed in his face. “How basic. What transpired next was essentially like that clip from Justin Bieber’s carpool karaoke with James Corden, where he’s like, ‘I don’t think so.’”
You see, I had a very clear idea of what I wanted – an urban zen oasis that exuded sophistication and tranquility. Ralf’s suggestion of basic white subway tiles just didn’t quite fit the bill. But that’s the beauty of bespoke design – it’s about embracing the unexpected and pushing the boundaries of what’s considered “ordinary.”
Navigating the Design Process
Oof, I’ve heard too many stories of people remodeling, regretting, and redoing, and I knew I couldn’t walk that same path. U-turns are costly, my friend. So, before we even got into the nitty-gritty details of picking out materials, we decided to tackle the layout.
Now, I’ll admit, I’m a bit of a control freak, so I knew I had to get the blueprint nailed from the start. Luckily, we had a general contractor to oversee the project, so we didn’t have to worry too much about the feasibility of making plumbing changes – that was their area of expertise.
We sketched out our ideal version of the bathroom within the existing four walls and showed it to our contractor for a discussion of feasibility, costs, and timelines. This was our bath, and there were three things that we wanted to change:
-
The Bathtub: My husband and I aren’t fans of stepping into a tub for a shower, plus the entire tub was elevated three-quarters of a foot, which was a safety hazard, especially for our elderly visitors.
-
Shower Head Wall: We loved the skylight, but the wall blocking the light didn’t make much sense to us.
-
Wasted Space: The 9-10 built wall above the washer and dryer just seemed like a waste of precious real estate.
Embracing the Unconventional
Now, I’ll be honest, I had my heart set on a cement-look, urban zen vibe for the bathroom. But finding someone who could execute that vision proved to be a bit of a challenge. I searched high and low, scouring the internet and calling up every builder I knew, but no one in Massachusetts seemed to know what I was talking about.
Seriously, don’t even get me started. I even contacted the folks in Florida to ask if they had someone who could help us out, but alas, no luck. It was like trying to find a unicorn in a haystack. I desperately asked my tile guy if he could search up all those DIY tutorials on YouTube and pull it off for us, but he just looked at me and asked if I really wanted to be his guinea pig. Needless to say, that was a brain fart, and we settled for good old-fashioned tiling instead.
Attention to Detail, Elevated
But just because we couldn’t achieve the cement-look, doesn’t mean we didn’t put our heart and soul into the design. Ralf happily bought into my vision, and we set out to find the perfect tiles that would capture the essence of our urban zen oasis.
We made a trip to Fitzgerald Tile in North Reading, and that’s where the magic happened. We were still hung up on that cement-look, and lo and behold, we found what we were looking for! We settled on large-format, cement-looking tiles for the bathroom floors, and then with those as our anchor, we found complementary tiles for the shower wall and floors.
Now, let me tell you, our tile expert, Gabriella Williamson (or “Gabe” as we like to call her), was a godsend. She taught us so much, like the importance of laying the tiles the way you want them to be eventually – you know, laying them down or up, depending on whether they’re for the floors or walls. Because, let’s face it, light hits differently, and that can really affect the color representation.
And let’s not forget about the grout and Schluter trim – those little details that can make or break the seamless look we were going for. Gabe was spot on in picking out the perfect colors to complement our tiles and ensure a truly cohesive, high-end finish.
Bringing it All Together
Now, I know what you’re thinking – “Whoa, that’s a lot of work!” And you’re absolutely right. Transforming a bathroom into a personalized oasis of relaxation is no easy feat. It takes meticulous planning, attention to detail, and a whole lot of patience.
But let me tell you, the end result is so worth it. Imagine stepping into your own private spa, where every element has been carefully curated to cater to your unique tastes and preferences. It’s a sanctuary that reflects your personal style and elevates your everyday routines.
And let’s not forget the practical benefits, too. By working closely with our general contractor and tile experts, we were able to optimize the layout and incorporate features that enhanced both the aesthetics and functionality of the space. No more stepping into a tub for a shower, and no more wasted space – just pure bliss, tailored to our needs.
