Swine No More: Transforming My Bathroom With a Splash of Color
I’ve been staring at the same dull, builder-grade “swine” walls in our master bathroom for the past six years, and let me tell you, it’s been a real challenge to look at that color first thing every morning. But the time has finally come to bid farewell to those dreaded walls and give our bathroom a much-needed refresh.
As a busy mom with three kids, I know that renovating a bathroom can be a daunting task, but I’m determined to make the most of this mini-makeover before we move on to our next home. I’m excited to share my design process with you and hopefully inspire you to tackle your own bathroom refresh, whether you’re a seasoned DIYer or a newbie like me.
Choosing a Muse and Establishing a Color Palette
The first step in my design process was to choose a muse that would set the tone for the entire room. When I laid eyes on this stunning vintage rug, I knew I had found my inspiration. The rich, earthy tones paired with the bold navy blue instantly captured my attention and got the creative juices flowing.
From there, I set out to establish a color palette that would complement the rug and work seamlessly with the existing tile and cabinetry. After some careful consideration and a few paint samples, I landed on a gorgeous Hasbrouck Brown from Benjamin Moore. This deep, moody hue adds warmth and depth to the space, while also playing nicely with the navy blue of the stunning wallpaper I’ve chosen for the accent wall.
Layering in Texture and Pattern
With the foundation of my color palette set, it was time to start layering in some texture and pattern. I knew I wanted to incorporate a mix of natural elements, like the wicker basket and vintage wooden stool, to balance out the bold wallpaper and create a cohesive, spa-like atmosphere.
The Tulip Ticking Stripe Wallpaper from my Chasing Paper collection is the real showstopper in this space. The rich navy hue and classic ticking stripe pattern instantly elevate the room, while the faux grasscloth texture adds an extra layer of depth and interest.
To complement the wallpaper, I’ve also incorporated a striped linen towel and a patterned tray, which help to tie the whole look together. The key is to mix and match different textures and patterns, allowing each element to shine without overwhelming the senses.
Wowing with Vintage
Now, this is where the real magic happens. As a self-proclaimed vintage enthusiast, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to scour local antique stores and flea markets for the perfect finishing touches. The moment I laid eyes on the wooden hexagon stool with its charming heart cutouts and aged patina, I knew it had to be mine.
The way the white paint has worn away, revealing hints of red underneath, creates such a beautiful, one-of-a-kind piece that adds so much character to the space. I’ve also incorporated a vintage wooden stool under the sink and an aged, gold-framed mirror to continue the warm, rustic vibe.
These vintage finds not only add visual interest to the room but also tell a story. They’re the elements that make this bathroom truly unique and reflective of my personal style.
A Spa-Like Oasis
As I step back and admire the finished product, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride and excitement. What was once a dull, builder-grade bathroom has been transformed into a cozy, spa-like oasis – a sanctuary where I can escape the chaos of everyday life and indulge in a little bit of self-care.
The rich, moody wall color, the bold wallpaper, and the carefully curated vintage pieces all work together to create a space that feels both visually stunning and incredibly inviting. And the best part? I know this mini-makeover is going to make a world of difference, not only for me but for the future owners of our home as well.
So, if you’re feeling stuck in a rut with your own bathroom, take a deep breath, embrace your inner designer, and let your creativity shine. With a little bit of imagination and a willingness to try new things, you can transform your space into the oasis of your dreams. Who knows, you might even find yourself saying goodbye to “swine” for good.
