Old Becomes New Again – Upcycled Garden Decor Projects

Upcycled Treasures for Your Garden Oasis

It’s that time of year again when my succulents are starting to multiply! I’m always amazed at how quickly these resilient plants can expand once the weather warms up. At the start of spring, I’m often alarmed to see my outdoor succulents looking shriveled and small. But like magic, once the temperatures consistently rise, the succulents begin to explode with vibrant growth.

I’m sharing my newest succulent garden decor ideas and my best tips on caring for these low-maintenance beauties. What a great time for the Thrift Store Décor Team to provide a special edition featuring SUCCULENTS! Each team member is contributing a new succulent-themed project, along with links to other fabulous succulent posts.

Bringing Life to Old Vessels

There’s something about planting succulents in unlikely vessels that simply makes my heart happy. A unique and unexpected planter adds to the inherent beauty of these succulents. I have a collection of pots “waiting” for my succulents, and I can’t wait to see how they’ll transform these old containers into works of art.

Take this old galvanized chicken feeder, for instance. I simply added some succulents, leaving room for them to grow. In a month or so, this should be a gorgeous, lush display. Succulents have a remarkable ability to double or even triple in size during the warm weather, making them an ideal choice for creative garden decor projects.

Dividing and Propagating for Abundance

During the winter months, my succulents are just trying to survive. But when the warmer weather arrives, they awaken and begin their rapid growth cycle. Because they can expand so quickly, I frequently thin out my succulent plantings by dividing one plant into three new pots.

When I lift a rootbound succulent out of its pot, it’s often difficult to separate the individual plants and roots. I use a spade to carefully cut the entire clump into halves or thirds, gently loosening the roots before replanting each division in fresh soil. The plants thrive with this simple division process, and I end up with an abundance of succulents to spread throughout my garden.

I also love propagating succulents from single leaves. Simply pluck off a leaf, place it in bright, direct sunlight, and watch as roots and new growth emerge. After a week or two, I plant the rooted leaf cutting in soil, and it continues to flourish as a brand-new succulent.

Versatile and Vibrant Decor

Succulents are incredibly versatile, and I find so much joy in incorporating them into unexpected places around my garden. I’ve added them to hanging baskets, mixed them into my flower pots, and even tucked them into the nooks and crannies of an old bird bath. These hardy plants provide a perfect pop of life and color, no matter where I place them.

And the beauty of succulents doesn’t stop there. I’ve also used them to transform an old garden table into a stunning potting bench for my outdoor workspace. The galvanized steel top provides the perfect surface for all my gardening projects, while the succulents add a touch of living, breathing charm.

A Refresh for Weathered Treasures

Of course, not all of my garden decor starts out in pristine condition. I’ve got a set of metal dragonfly sculptures that have weathered the elements for the past few years. The original paint has faded and chipped, and the metal has started to rust. But with a little elbow grease and some vibrant spray paint, I was able to breathe new life into these whimsical garden accents.

By sanding away the rust and applying a few coats of primer and paint, I was able to transform these dragonflies into bright, colorful focal points for my deck. I even used painter’s tape to create a fun, contrasting border around the wings, adding an extra touch of personality. A final layer of polyurethane will help protect my refreshed dragonflies from the elements for seasons to come.
