The Dream of a Farmhouse Sink
I’ve always dreamed of having a big, white farmhouse sink in my kitchen. There’s just something so charming and inviting about those deep, apron-front basins that instantly add a touch of rustic elegance to any space. But if I’m being honest, I never truly believed this dream would become a reality. After all, I’m not living in some grand farmhouse on acres of land – my kitchen is pretty average-sized, just like the rest of my home. Surely a farmhouse sink was reserved for those sprawling country kitchens, not my modest city abode, right?
Boy, was I wrong. When I started planning my recent kitchen renovation, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that getting my very own farmhouse sink was actually a completely achievable goal. With a little bit of research and the right approach, I was able to find the perfect farmhouse-style sink that fit my space and my budget. And let me tell you, it has completely transformed the look and feel of my kitchen in the most incredible way.
Sizing It Up
The first step in choosing a farmhouse sink is determining the right size. These sinks come in a variety of widths, so you’ll need to measure the cabinet space you have available to make sure you get one that fits seamlessly. As a general rule, the sink should be a few inches narrower than the cabinet it will be installed in.
Another key consideration is whether you want a single-basin or double-basin sink. This really comes down to personal preference and how you use your kitchen. I opted for a double-basin design, as I liked the idea of having one side for washing and one for rinsing. But a classic single-basin farmhouse sink can be equally stunning and practical.
Exposed or Integrated?
One of the defining features of a farmhouse sink is the exposed “apron” or front panel that sits flush with your countertop. This creates a beautiful focal point in the kitchen. However, if you’re working with existing cabinetry and countertops, an exposed apron may not be an option. In that case, an integrated farmhouse sink that sits flush with the countertop can be a great alternative.
If you do have the flexibility to go with an exposed apron, you’ll then need to decide on the style. A simple, streamlined design can create a timeless, understated look, while a subtly patterned or detailed apron can make more of a statement. There are so many gorgeous options to choose from!
Material Matters
Farmhouse sinks are typically made from durable, easy-to-clean materials like fireclay, stainless steel, or matte stone. Each option has its own unique benefits and aesthetic. Fireclay, for example, has a classic, timeless look and is highly scratch-resistant. Stainless steel, on the other hand, is sleek and modern, while matte stone adds a beautiful natural element.
The material you choose will not only impact the overall style of your kitchen but also how you maintain the sink on a day-to-day basis. Be sure to do your research and weigh the pros and cons of each option to find the best fit for your needs and preferences.
Cabinets and Plumbing, Oh My!
When it comes to installing a farmhouse sink, there are a few important considerations around your cabinetry and plumbing that you’ll want to keep in mind. First, if you’re ordering new cabinets, make sure to communicate to your cabinet specialist that you’ll be using a farmhouse sink. This will ensure the cabinet doors and drawers are sized appropriately to accommodate the sink’s depth and apron.
Speaking of depth, farmhouse sinks tend to be quite a bit deeper than standard sinks, which means they can take up a significant amount of cabinet space underneath. So if maximizing storage is a priority, you may want to factor that in when choosing your sink size.
Another key point is to make your plumbers aware of your farmhouse sink plans as early as possible. The increased depth of these sinks often requires the plumbing to be relocated, and you’ll want to make sure that work can be done before the walls are closed up and the cabinets are installed. Trust me, you don’t want to end up in a situation where the plumbing needs to be moved after the fact – that can get messy (and costly) really quickly!
The Perfect Farmhouse Faucet
No farmhouse-style kitchen is complete without the perfect complementary faucet. If you’re getting new countertops, you’ll have more flexibility when it comes to choosing a faucet, as the countertop team can cut the necessary holes to accommodate it.
But if you’re working with existing countertops, you’ll need to select a faucet that aligns with the number of holes you already have. And I’d highly recommend going with a pull-down or pull-out style – the extended reach and maneuverability makes it so much easier to clean those deep farmhouse sink basins.
Some of my personal favorite farmhouse-inspired faucet picks include the Moen Align, the Delta Trinsic, and the Kohler Artifacts. And of course, don’t forget to consider finishes that will complement the overall style of your kitchen, like stainless steel, oil-rubbed bronze, or brushed nickel.
A Dream Realized
When I first started planning my kitchen renovation, I really didn’t think a farmhouse sink was in the cards for me. But through a little bit of research, planning, and open communication with my contractors, I was able to make that dream a reality. And let me tell you, it was 100% worth it.
Not only is my farmhouse sink an absolute showstopper in my kitchen, but it’s also incredibly functional and durable. I love being able to easily wipe countertop messes straight into the sink, and the deep basins give me ample space for washing even my largest pots and pans. It’s truly transformed the entire look and feel of my kitchen.
