Converting the Garage – Extension Ideas for Unused Spaces

Converting the Garage – Extension Ideas for Unused Spaces

Turning My Garage into a Dreamy Art Studio

I’ll never forget the day I first laid eyes on our new house and laid out my grand plan for the garage. My husband Craig looked at me like I had three heads when I suggested converting that dusty, cluttered space into a bright, airy art studio.

“You want to get rid of the garage? Where are we going to park?” he asked, baffled.

I totally understood his hesitation. The garage is often the catchall for all the things we don’t want cluttering up the rest of the house – tools, holiday decor, random storage bins. It’s the one place we can just toss stuff without having to worry about it.

But for me, that garage represented so much more potential. I could envision it as a blank canvas – a space where I could get messy and creative, away from the distractions of the main house. A place to stretch my artistic wings and really dive into my passion for painting.

After reading Anne’s story about converting her own garage into an art studio, I was even more inspired to take the plunge. If she could do it, so could I!

From Cluttered Garage to Dreamy Studio

The first step was getting rid of all the stuff. We ended up buying a nice shed to put in the backyard so we could store the lawnmower, power tools, and everything else that had been living in the garage.

Then came the real work – building the subfloor, framing the walls, and getting the electrical and plumbing squared away. Jess’s blog post on converting her garage into a bedroom and bathroom was super helpful in walking me through all the steps.

The most daunting part was dealing with the permits and inspections. I was honestly a little nervous about that whole process, but it ended up being pretty straightforward. We just had to submit our plans to the town, get the permit, and schedule the necessary inspections along the way. The Reddit thread on converting a garage to living space reassured me that as long as we did things the right way, it wouldn’t be a big headache.

As the project started to take shape, I got giddier and giddier. Watching that dreary, utilitarian space transform into my own private creative oasis was such an incredible feeling. I still can’t believe this is my life!

Designing the Perfect Art Studio

When it came to the design, I really wanted to create a light, airy, and inspirational environment. Lots of natural light was a must, so we installed a skylight in the bathroom area and kept the ceiling open and vaulted.

I loved the look of the exposed beams in this converted garage, so we went with a similar aesthetic by using 1×8 and 1×10 pine boards for the ceiling.

For the floors, we opted for prefinished hardwood in a beautiful oak tone. I was a little worried about having a hard floor in the studio, since I tend to be on my feet a lot, but the hardwood has actually been great. It’s durable and easy to clean, which is key when you’re working with messy media like encaustic wax.

Of course, proper lighting was essential. We went with a mix of recessed LED lights and some fun pendant fixtures to create a warm, inviting ambiance. As Anne mentioned, making sure the lighting was as close to daylight as possible was crucial for accurately seeing colors and values.

The final touch was the custom art table I had built. It’s a beast – 8 feet wide, 4 feet deep, and 3 feet tall, with outlets on both ends and a pair of sliding storage shelves. I can spread out all my supplies and really get into the zone when I’m working.

Making the Most of Every Square Foot

One of the best parts about converting the garage is that we were able to maximize the space in a way that just wouldn’t have been possible with a traditional home addition. By taking over the existing footprint, we avoided the hassle and expense of expanding the foundation.

Sure, we had to get a little creative with the layout to fit everything in. The bathroom is a tight squeeze, but it’s fully functional and beautifully designed. And the bedroom area is cozy but totally workable, with some clever IKEA wardrobe solutions to maximize storage.

Overall, I’d say we gained at least 400-500 square feet of usable living space by converting the garage. That’s a game-changer, especially in a smaller home like ours. And with the home extension and conversion services offered by ABC Home, the whole process was remarkably smooth.

A Studio That Sparks Joy (and Creativity!)

These days, when I step into my studio, I feel an immediate sense of calm and inspiration. It’s become my own little oasis – a space that’s 100% tailored to my needs as an artist.

I love having the freedom to get messy and experiment without worrying about disrupting the rest of the house. And the convenient access to the basement through the garage has been a game-changer, making it easy to store supplies and finished paintings.

Even better, I can now hold art workshops and classes in my own private studio. No more packing up all my materials and trekking to a rented space. I just open up the garage door and welcome students into my creative sanctuary.

When I compare this studio to the cramped corner I used to work in, it’s almost laughable. The open, airy layout, the abundant natural light, the custom workstations – it all comes together to fuel my creativity in a way I didn’t even know was possible.

So if you’re on the fence about converting your own garage, I say go for it! It was a ton of work, no doubt, but the payoff has been life-changing. I wake up excited to come into my studio every single day, and that’s the kind of joy and fulfillment you just can’t put a price tag on.
